Queensland thrash WA
Saturday, February 14 2004It was a night of records in the ING Cup, at the 'Gabba where Queensland annihilated Western Australia with a victory of 207 runs. Opening with Stuart Law, Jimmy Maher set apart their intentions by flying to 194 before Law was dismissed for 95 (off 69 balls) in the 23rd over. Promoted to number 3 as a pinch hitter, out of favor Australian pace bowler Andy Bichel scored a quick fire 41 off 45 balls before he was caught wit the score on 290 in the 37th over.
Maher blazed his way to 187 (off 129 balls) before he got out, but Queensland finished with 405-4 off their 50 overs. Maher fell four runs short of Darren Lehmann's highest Australian score in a one day match. Not surprisingly all the WA bowlers were punished.
Western Australia never had a chance. They lost regular wickets and their batsmen made starts but never went on. Mike Hussey (66) and Kade Harvey (43) were the highlights in a one-side affair. Bichel took 2-37 off ten, while promising Queensland off spinner Chris Simpson took 2-6 at the end.
