Bangladesh v Zimbabwe 'A'
Tuesday, February 17 2004Bangladesh completed a win in their lone pre-Test warmup - a three-day game against Zimbabwe A. The win came by a margin of 29 runs after the hosts collapsed chasing a modest 191 for victory.
New Bangladesh captain, Habibul Bashar won the toss and decided to take first strike. Early wickets fell, including Bashar (10), and score slumped to 46/3. Mohammed Ashraful (11) briefly partnered Shahriar Hossain (75) and they took the score to 83/4, then another collapse saw it at 90/6. Manjural Islam Rana scored 40 in assisting his team to 199 all out. Douglas Hondo (3/19) was the main Zimbabwean bowler of reckoning.
The home side response was less than amazing, and it took 71 from Gavin Ewing to lift the score to 183 all out. Test players Trevor Gripper (38) and Douglas Marillier (26) also contributed usefully. Alamgir Kabir snared 5 for 47 for Bangladesh in the effort.
Batting a second time, now with a lead of 16 runs, Sarkar (5 and 6) perished early for the second time in the match. Habibul Bashar failed to score when he was bowled by Mahwire and Rajin Saleh (8) was caught by Friend off Gary Brent. Brent followed this up with his second of three wickets, trapping Al Sahariar in front first ball - 42/5.
For the second time in the match, Manjural Islam Rana (25) helped resurrect the innings, this time with the help of Khaled Mashud (22). Ultimately the innings closed on a paltry 174 all out, leaving Zimbabwe 'A' to score 191 to win.
Early inroads came via Tareq Aziz (6/46) in the form of Gripper (0) and Sims (0) off consecutive balls. Stuart Matsikenyeri (20) hung around a bit, but was caught behind off Kabir at 62/3. Sibanda and Maregwede both hit 41, however it was not enough and the collapse completed at 161 all out. First innings topscorer, Gavin Ewing was out first ball in his second knock. Manjural Islam Rana took 3 for 44 to assist Aziz in the bowling department.
