Mark Waugh Confirms Retirement

Tuesday, February 17 2004

Former Australian batsman Mark Waugh has confirmed that the remainder of this domestic summer will be his final days in first-class cricket.

At 38, Waugh sees the final round of Pura Cup matches as a fitting finale to a glittering career of more than 350 international matches.

He will bow out alongside brother Steve, who prior to the Indian Test Series announced that this summer would be his last.

Their last match will be against Queensland at the SCG beginning on March 4.

Since his dumping from the Test side last summer, Mark has struggled for consistent domestic runs before his 91 two weeks ago against Queensland saved the axe from falling.

New South Wales have not ruled out chasing players from other states to fill the void left by the Waugh twins.
