Haddin recall for rested Gilchrist

Wednesday, January 21 2004

The Australian selectors have continued with the policy of resting senior players.

Chairman Trevor Hohns today announced New South Wales keeper/batsman Brad Haddin will replace Adam Gilchrist for Australia’s two VB Series fixtures, in Adelaide & Melbourne.

Gilchrist, who scored a carear best 172 against Zimbabwe last Friday, is being given some well deserved recuperation time ahead of the VB Series finals & Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka.

Hohn’s commented “Given the sheer intensity of his position, this break should present him with the chance to freshen-up and take stock from the stresses and strains that are part and parcel with a wicket-keeper's job”.

Haddin, who played made his only previous ODI appearance against Zimbabwe in 2001, has represented the Australia A one day side already this summer, although he missed out on the first class match to Queenslander Wade Seccombe.

Haddin will join the Australian squad in Adelaide later this week & appears a possibility to open the batting along side Matthew Hayden.
