Hookes Assaulted

Monday, January 19 2004

Former Australian batsman and current Victorian coach David Hookes is fighting for his life in hospital following his assault last night.

In attempting to break up a fight Hookes, 48, received severe bashing to the head.

On arrival, paramedics worked on the former Australian batsman for half an hour before rushing him to hospital.

He is currently connected to a life support machine in intensive care following his revival on the scene, before which he was said to be 'technically dead'.

In a sad twist, Hookes was celebrating yesterday's ING Cup victory against South Australia with the Victorian squad.

The bouncer of the pub is expected to be arrested sometime today as the main suspect.

In what can only be described as a sad, sad act, Hookes was allegedly king-hit from behind.

His current condition in Alfred Hospital is listed as critical.

The Cricket Web community passes its best wishes to Hookes and his family in this terrible time.
