David Hookes Passes Away

Monday, January 19 2004

Australian cricketing legend David Hookes has passed away, with his brother Terry Cranagh confirming the worst in a news conference on Monday evening.

Victorian coach Hookes, 48, was taken off life support earlier today and tragically lost his battle for survival early in the evening (Monday 19 January).

Hookes was celebrating yesterday's ING Cup victory against South Australia with the Victorian squad in a St Kilda pub and while leaving, he attempted to stabilise a fight between bouncers and girlfriends of the Victorian cricketers.

Once he turned his back, reports state that Hookes was king-hit in the back of the head and fell heavially on the road, cracking his skull.

He was also believed to have suffered from a cardiac arrest.

Paramedics worked for half an hour reviving Hookes, said to be 'technically dead' at the scene, before he was taken to Alfred Hospital and placed on life support.

Around 4:30 pm, it was announced to the media that the Hookes family had decided to switch off his life support.

He passed away just after 6pm.

Bouncer Zdravco Micevic was arrested this morning and is currently on bail for assault charges.

Cricket Web wishes to extend its deepest sympathies to David's wife Robyn, his children, family and friends in this tragic time.

R.I.P: David Hookes - 1955-2004.
