Dwayne Smith heads to SA

Monday, December 8 2003

Dwayne Smith has been called up to the West Indies senior team currently touring South Africa. The 20-year-old Bajan right-hander is a surprise selection, to say the least. Having done little of note for Barbados in either FC or OD cricket, Smith was not the most likely of picks.

Smith is a exciting strokeplayer, capable of smashing the ball about. Recently in the 2003 Red Stripe Bowl, Smith hit an unbeaten 92 from just 70 balls. That innings contained nine (9) sixes and three (3) fours.

However, in his 14 FC games, Smith has found it hard to maintain form, with 456 runs at 22.80, and only a brilliant hundred against the Leeward Islands in his milestone columns. In List-A OD's, he's fared better, with 159 runs in 5 innings with his unbeaten 92 being the only venture past the half-century mark.

Smith is an outstanding fielder and a useful medium pacer, having claimed 10 wickets (23.80 average) in FC cricket.
