Dave Mohammed gets call

Friday, December 5 2003

Left-arm unorthodox spinner Dave Mohammed has been called up to the West Indies touring squad in South Africa. The Trinidadian bowler will replace the injured Jerome Taylor.

Viv Richards, Chairman of selectors, stated regarding the choice, "Judging from the word coming out of South Africa, and having regard for South Africa's vulnerability to wrist spinners, and having further regard for their recent tour of Pakistan, it was felt among the selectors that a bit of variety would be needed. So we're back-tracking from six quicks to a wrist spinner in Dave Mohammed as replacement. This, especially after Ramnarine's successes against them."

Mohammed has taken 52 wickets in his 16 FC games to date. He averages 23.41 per wicket with a strike-rate of 53. In List A-OD, he has taken 12 wickets in 9 games at 20.91 apiece with an economy of 3.58. In addition to his bowling, Mohammed offers useful runs in the lower order, averaging just under 20 with the bat in FC cricket with a half-century to his name.

The closest he has been to the senior side to this point is when he was included in a provisional squad against New Zealand in 2002.
