Ponting to succeed Waugh
Sunday, November 30 2003Ponting named as Waugh’s successor
Ricky Ponting , Australia’s world cup winning one day captain & test deputy , has been confirmed as Australia’s next test captain.
The announcement coming as no major surprise after Steve Waugh announced earlier this week that the upcoming test series against India would be his last.
Ponting will take over from Waugh for the test series in Sri Lanka in late February , with Adam Gilchrist , who has led him country in 2 test matches , named as Ponting’s likely deputy.
The announcement marks a remarkable turn around for the Launceston born Ponting , touted as a future captain since his teenage days , the talented batsman initially struggled to cement his place at test level , and in the late 90’s he was involved in several off field indiscretions which threatened his leadership credentials.
However when the selectors elected to axe Steve Waugh for the Aussie one day outfit in early 2002 , they turned to Ponting ahead of the more experienced combination of Gilchrist & Shane Warne.
However the Tasmanian soon justified the selectors faith in him , winning his first series in charge 5-1 , he has since added the World Cup , VB series & TVS cup to the Australian Trophy cabinet , the ICC Champions Trophy being the one notable prize to escape his grasp.
Ponting was typically modest upon receiving the news , thanking the ACB directors for their support.
He will be the 42nd man to captain Australia in a test match.
