Wellington win State Champ.
Sunday, March 7 2004Wellington have won the State Championship for the second time in four years having hung on for a draw against Canterbury at the Basin Reserve.
Canterbury batted on into Day 4 and declared an hour into the first session setting Wellington 227 to the win from 90 overs.
Wellington struggled early losing Jones and Donaldson with the score at 23. From this point on Wellington gave up trying to win the game and settled into blocking everything that came down at them.
This appeared to backfire greatly as Cunis took two wickets from two balls and had Wellington at 83/5 middle way through the second session. This could have been even worse for Wellington had Harris managed to hang on to a simple chance from Nevin early in his innings.
Bell and Nevin managed to get Wellington through to tea but the first over back saw Harris dismiss Bell caught behind for 57 and with 36 overs remaining Canterbury were in with a real shout.
Walker then came to the crease to join Nevin and between them they got Wellington through to stumps at 182/6. Nevin finished on 43 not out from 150 balls while Walker finished on 29 not out from 119 balls.
