Dilshan puts Sri Lanka in charge
Wednesday, March 10 2004A hard fought century from Tillekeratne Dilshan and some uninspired bowling from the new-look Australian attack has seen Sri Lanka take the upper hand on day 2 of the first test.
The home side started the day well placed at 1-81, but tight opening spells from Michael Kasprowics & Jason Gillespie brought things back under control, the in form Kumar Sangakkara spooning a sharp return catch to Michael Kasprowics for 22.
Gillespie struck shortly after, having Atapattu bowled by a spitting off-cutter to leave the match in the balance at 3-123.
However Mahela Jayawardene & Dilshan soon wrestled the ascendancy from the visitors, adding a brisk stand of 75 before Jayawardene hit a wide ball from Andrew Symonds straight to point, giving the Queenslander his first test wicket.
Dilshan then added a further 100 with his skipper, before Warne trapped the defiant Hashan Tillekeratne plumb in front for 33, giving himself a 2 wicket lead over Muttiah Muralitharan in the race to 500.
Dilshan brought up his 3rd test century shortly after, however a miscued pull shot soon brought his downfall…. Justin Langer taking a good catch to dismiss the defiant right hander for 104 (12 fours, 1 six).
Thilan Samaraweera & Uple Chandana the batted out the remainder of the days play , the Sri Lankans closing on 6-352, a lead of 132.
