Bangladesh gain second draw
Tuesday, March 2 2004Rain was the winner, as Zimbabwe and Bangladesh ended up drawing the Second and Final Test at Bulawayo.
In all, only 136 overs were possible in 5 days of play, as the ICC Ten Year Plan again meant matches were scheduled for the wrong time of the year.
Resuming on 88-5, Bangladesh quickly lost Mushfiqur Rahman leg before wicket to Douglas Hondo for a duck, but wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud dug in, and lasted for almost an hour and a half to firmly deny any faint hopes Zimbabwe had of a remarkable win.
He fell to Sean Ervine for 9 runs before Ray Price took centre stage picking up the last 3 wickets for 20 runs. Manjural Islam Rana top scored with 39, and Mohammad Rafique fired a breezy unbeaten 26 from number 10, but the innings ended at 168 all out.
In reply, Dion Ebrahim fell early on for 2 to Tapash Baisya, but Trevor Gripper and Stuart Carlisle took over, and added 129 for the 2nd wicket before Gripper fell for 65, again to Baisya.
With the match drawing to a dull conclusion, Carlisle comtinued to score runs, and was rewarded with his second Test century as he cover drove a boundary off Mohammad Ashraful, and immediately stumps were drawn, and all 50 or so spectators (why anyone, even the players, bothered to turn up is a mystery!) could trudge home.
All in all, one of the more pointless days of Test Cricket in recent times, if not ever.
BANGLADESH 168 (Islam Rana 39, Price 3-20, Ervine 3-44)
ZIMBABWE 210-2 (Carlisle 103*, Gripper 65)
