WI name Washington in 16-man squad
Tuesday, March 2 2004The West Indies provisional 16-man squad for the first Test against England has been announced. Brian Lara has officially been retained as captain to lead the team against England and Bangladesh in the home stand, but will be leading some slightly different faces.
The one big surprise in the squad is the inclusion Jamaican Dwight Washington, who took 20 wickets at 22 apiece this season for the West Indies 'B' team. He essentially replaces Mervyn Dillon in the running as the leading West Indies fast bowler has not been included in the squad.
Unsurprisingly, Daren Ganga has also been axed, after a horrible showing with the bat in South Africa and not much done in the Carib Beer Cup upon his return.
Returning to West Indies contention are Tino Best (1 Test against Australia last year), Dave Mohammed (picked then sacked in South Africa, 1 Test) and Ryan Hinds (4 Tests).
Full squad:
Brian Lara, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle, Devon Smith, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ridley Jacobs, Dwayne Smith, Fidel Edwards, Corey Collymore, Dave Mohammed, Ricardo Powell, Carlton Baugh, Tino Best, Ryan Hinds, Adam Sanford and Dwight Washington.
