Shaun Tait called up

Thursday, March 11 2004

The National Selection Panel (NSP) has announced that 21-year old South Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait to replace the injured Brett Lee in Australia's Tour of Sri Lanka.

Tait earned selection for Australia 'A' against India in a three day match in Hobart. He also represented Australia 'A' in two one-day matches against Zimbabwe at Adelaide and Hobart.

Tait picked up 33 wickets in this season's Pura Cup and in January, Tait broke Australian domestic one day record by taking 8-43 against Tasmania at the Adelaide Oval. Tait capped off his good season by winning the 03/04 Bradman Young Cricketer of the year and the ING Best Young Talent.

Trevor Hohns commentated on Tait's selection: "Shaun Tait is a quality young quick who has impressed us with his raw pace over the summer. "We have selected him specifically as a like-replacement for Brett Lee who was the quickest bowler in our touring line-up.

"It's a great opportunity for Shaun, and a selection decision with a view to the future.

"Obviously names such as Andy Bichel, Nathan Bracken and Glenn McGrath were discussed, but on this occasion we felt that Shaun was the most suitable player to fill the void left by Brett's departure," he said.
