SA-WI: Gibbs makes WI suffer

Monday, December 29 2003

A century from Herschelle Gibbs put South Africa in a commanding position at the end of the second day's play in the Second Test at Kingsmead.

Vasbert Drakes recorded his highest Test score of 67 to lift the West Indies to 264 all out from their overnight 232/8, adding 70 for the ninth wicket with Adam Sanford.

In reply, the South Africans cantered to 303/3, at over four an over, with Gibbs striking 23 fours in his 175-ball, four-and-a-half-hour 142.

Jacques Kallis (74*) and Gary Kirsten (16*) are unbeaten at close as the Proteas look to establish a significant first innings lead over their visitors.
