Ponting's scores of 257 & 31* take him to 634 runs at an average of 126 for the current series, he now needs just 69 runs to take George Headley's record for most runs in a 4 test series, set in 1930 against England.
Ponting's match aggregate of 288 takes him to 1503 test runs for the calendar year at an average of 100.2, this is the most runs ever made in a calendar year by an Australian & the second most ever in a calendar year, Viv Richards 1710 in 1976 still holds the record though.
It is also just the 3rd instance of a batsman scoring over 1000 runs at an average of better than 100 in a year & the 2nd instance of a batsman scoring 3 double centuries in a year.
Ponting's 257 takes him past 1000 runs against India, he now has 1158 runs in 13 matches against them.
