Bangladesh v Zimbabwe : Day 1
Friday, February 20 2004Following a two hour rain delay at the start of the day, the battle of the bottom finally kicked off as Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat against Bangladesh. Early success came for the tourists, with new captain Habibul Bashar taking a good catch to dismiss Gripped without scoring.
Carlisle came to the crease and looked cut for a six then hit another boundary to get away rather nicely. Together with the incumbent Ebrahim (65), Carlisle managed to add 107 runs for the second wicket until his dismissal. Tapash Baisya managed to snare him 'caught and bowled', providing him with his second wicket of the innings. Carlise made 58 to the cause and was replaced by the experienced Grant Flower (5).
The score progressed slowly to 130 and Ebrahim was stumped by Mashud off the bowling of leading Bangladeshi bowler, Mohammad Rafique (2/41). When Flower fell to the same bowler just 3 runs later, a collapse seemed eminent, but Tatenda Taibu (18 not out) and Sean Ervine (25 not out) managed to consolidate nicely to the close at 175/4. A total of 16 overs were left unplayed on the day and stumps were drawn with the batsmen offered light.
Match Summary:
Zimbabwe 1st innings 175/4 (74 overs)
(DD Ebrahim 65, SV Carlisle 58, SM Ervine 25 not out)
(Mohammad Rafique 2/41, Tapash Baisya 2/47)
