Aussies out but SA scrape through
Sunday, February 22 2004A determined 20-run last wicket stand between Waylain September and Keegan Africa was enough for South Africa to scrape past England and into the Super League of the U19 World Cup at the expense of Nepal.
England were bowled out for 189 despite being 158-4 at one point however the loss of Steven Davies (63) heralded a collapse. Vaughan van Jaarsveld made 76 in the South African reply, but it was Africa's crucial 26* that saw them home despite Tim Bresnan's 3-35.
Australia were not so fortunate. Needing a big win, they stumbled to 52-4 before some late order resistance helped them to 186. This meant that they needed to bowl Sri Lanka out for 97, and at 10-4 it looked possible, however Maharoof (56) and Silva (46) put on 96 as Sri Lanka comfortably qualified, and should have won but for losing all their last three wickets on 184.
Meanwhile, India ended Bangladesh's hopes of qualification for the Super League with a 131-run win thanks to Shikhar Dhawan's 120, and Jahangir Mirza's 92 and Riaz Afridi's 5-28 led Pakistan to a 163-run win over the West Indies, who stumbled to 88 all out.
