Carib Beer Cup 2004
Round 7

Barbados v. Trinidad and Tobago at Pointe-a-Pierre

The Trinidad and Tobago bowlers and batsmen showed much less than 100% effort today as Barbados took full control of their seventh round game. Needing to take some signifcant points out of this match to make the semi-finals of the tournament, T&T will start the final day staring at defeat.

Overnight batsmen Wilkinson (82) and Ryan Hinds (83) progressed rather easily in the morning session and improved their partnership to 132 runs for the fourth wicket. When they were split, Dwayne Smith attacked his way to 40 until he was beaten in the flight by Mohammed whilst charging down the track.

Courtney Browne, the hero of the first innings, once again came to his team's aid and played another captain's innings, this time scoring 82 in Barbados' eventual total of 372 all out, a lead of 392 runs. Chasing the huge target, Sherwin Ganga (0) and Ricardo Powell (6) departed early, with the latter playing a loose shot outside his offstump. Aneil Kanhai looked very aggressive in compiling 9, hitting two boundaries in a Collymore over and then clipping the same bowler to be caught at square leg.

Brian Lara came to the crease to a rousing ovation and got to 14, then top-edged an attempted pull off Fidel Edwards to be caught at midon. Trinidad and Tobago closed on 60/4 with Daren Ganga still unbeaten on 16 and Gibran Mohammed on 3. Dwayne Bravo did not take the field on this day as he is said to be nursing an injured knee.

Kenya v. Guyana at Georgetown

Guyana continued to press on from their strong first day showing to stand nicely placed against their Kenyan opponents. Ramnaresh Sarwan improved from his overnight 151 to 199, where he remained for 12 deliveries before finding Obuya at point and missing out on his maiden double hundred.

Chanderpaul got to 75 for his wicket and the innings fairly collapsed from 383/4 to 444 all out. Rageb Aba grabbed 4/71 for Kenya.

Chasing the huge first innings total, Kenya lost Otieno (3) and Aga (1) to slip to 15/2, then Tikolo (22) set about to rebuild with Brijal Patel (59). Jamaica v. Leeward Islands at Alpart Sports Club

An unbeaten century by West Indies opening batsman Chris Gayle stole the show today and Jamaica resumed control of their game against the Leewards, after the visitors earlier recovered from an overnight position of 39/5 to 190 all out.

Sylvester Joseph played a captain's innings as he got to 89 in his best effort at recovery. Ridley Jacobs (32) and Chaka Hodge (46) were the only other batsmen to get into double figures in the innings. Despite fracturing his left forearm the day before, Gareth Breese bowled for figures of 12-3-30-2 in the innings. However, the real star with the ball was Daren Powell, who finished with 5 for 40 on his return to the Jamaican team.

With a 10-run lead in the bag, the Jamaican openers proceeded to compile an unbroken 158-run stand from the 36 overs faced before stumps. Gayle was certainly the aggressor of the partnership and reached his hundred from only 91 balls. In getting there he delighted the crowd with 16 fours and an outstanding six over extra cover. At the other end Maurice Kepple was solid in scoring 47 not out to the overnight total.

Gayle's century is his seventeenth at FC level.
