Gough signs for Essex

Tuesday, February 3 2004

After a fortnight of speculation, Essex have signed Darren Gough for a three-year contract. The news was announced formally at a press conference today morning.

Gough left Yorkshire last month, for he wanted to spend more time with his family in the south of England.

Gough retired from Test cricket last summer following a long-term knee injury. However, he still hopes to be back in the English ODI side soon.

Gough cited the presence of former England captains Nasser Hussain and Graham Gooch, now Essex coach, and also ODI team-mate and current Essex captain Ronnie Irani, as major reasons for his decision of joining Essex.

Warkwickshire and Middlesex were also in the race to hire Gough, but in the end Gough chose to join Essex.

Here are some quotes from the press conference:

Darren Gough: "Essex are an ambitious club and I believe we can win trophies." "There's the nucleus of a good side here and I hope I can help the young bowlers who're here."

Graham Gooch: "He's a quality player who can help us immensely." "We knew there was a chance he was going to be available and made our interest known."

Ronnie Irani: "He's still one of the best in the world in one-day cricket." "His knee will have to be managed in the four-day game, but he's still going to do an excellent job for us. He plays with his heart on his sleeve and a smile on his face, and he's a No. 1 name in cricket."
