Bevan Injured; Ponting to Rest

Friday, January 30 2004

Australia will head to Perth for this weekends VB Series tie against India without injured batsman Michael Bevan and resting captain Ricky Ponting.

Bevan was struck in the nets earlier this week, and while batting and making 56 today, the extreme pain of a broken rib forces the left-hander to miss the remainder of the VB Series.

The estimated time of healing for such an injury is 6 weeks, jeopardising the middle-order batsman's hopes of touring Sri Lanka in February and March.

Meanwhile, captain Ricky Ponting will be given the weekend off from duty, rested from the Perth encounter that precedes the VB finals series.

Adam Gilchrist will captain the side in front of his home fans.

At this stage, no replacements have been named.

Simon Katich looms as the obvious choice for one spot, with a host of batsmen including Jimmy Maher, Brad Hodge and Mike Hussey fighting for the second vacated batting slot.

Meanwhile, today's encounter between Australia and Zimbabwe was abandoned following torrential evening rain in Melbourne.
