Carib Beer Cup 2004

Day 1 The Leeward Islands vs Trinidad and Tobago at Pointe-a-Pierre, Trinidad.

Trinidad and Tobago were put in to bat by the Leeward Islands and ended fairly struggling after being well-placed at 100/2 at lunch. Openers Imran Jan (55) and Dwayne Bravo (26) looked comfortable against some far from troublesome bowling by the Leewards' seamers but both perished to debutant left-arm spinner Virgil Browne. This was the beginning of a wonderful start to Browne's career as he claimed the first 7 wickets to fall in the T&T innings.

Ricardo Powell (3) on his Trinidad and Tobago debut charged senselessly down the pitch to Browne and was stumped comfortably. Impressive knocks from former Windies youth captain, Tishan Maraj (61) and Shazam Babwah (94) rescued the innings nicely as the two raised a century stand before the former chipped a return catch to Browne. Babwah batted with much aggressive intent and certainly delighted the crowd but was eventually stumped off a beautiful delivery which pitched on middle stump and spun across him.

Wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed (22) fought on, but two more wickets were lost to leave the hosts at 293/8 at the close of play. Browne has bowled 35-2-123-7 to date.

Trinidad & Tobago 1st innings 293/8
(Shazam Babwah 94, Tishan Maraj 61, Imran Jan 55)
(Virgil Browne 7/123)

Day 1 Kenya v West Indies 'B' at Basseterre, St. Kitts.

Inspired by the off-spin bowling of former captain Maurice Odumbe, Kenya knocked over the West Indies 'B' team for a meagre 97 runs. Of the total, Jason Haynes (28) and Ryan Ramdass (17) were the major contributors. Odumbe finished with the fantastic figures of 5/11 and leggie Collins Obuya took 2/3.

In reply Kenya never really got going and, but for a defiant 61 from Odumbe, the innings would have been a disaster. Martin Suji (24) also gave some decent support in the face of a spell of bowling that produced 5/45 for talented seamer Jason Bennett. Ramdass also chipped in with 2/16 as Kenya were bowled out just before the close for 149 and a lead of of 52 runs.

Day 1 Guyana v Barbados at Bridgetown, Barbados.

Defending champions Barbados dominated proceedings on the opening day of their first round clash with Guyana. The Bajan bowlers started the strong showing by knocking over Guyana for only 108 runs.

On a pitch giving bounce and assistance to the seamers, Collins sent the visitors reeling at 46/6 at the luncheon interval. Haniff (4), Arjune (0), Chattergoon (6) and Narsingh Deonarine (0) to help him to the superb figures of 4/31. Ian Bradshaw claimed Cush for 16 and top-scorer Mahendra Nagamootoo for 38. Nagamootoo combined with Neil McGarrell to lead a rear-guard fightback due a 60-run eighth wicket partnership.

After the partnership was broken, Hurley (2/6) claimed two quick wickets to leave McGarrell stranded on 21. In reply to the small total, Barbados wasted no time as they looked very much settled in getting to 120/2 from the 43 overs to the close. Sherwin Campbell (12) and Ryan Hinds (21) proved the only casualties as Kurt Wilkinson looked in sublime touch with some superb offside strokeplay leaving him unbeaten on 72 overnight.

With Wilkinson is Reifer (8) as Barbados go into the second day with a first innings lead of 12 runs and still 8 wickets in hand.

Guyana 1st innings 108 ao
(Mahendra Nagamootoo 38, Neil McGarrell 21 not out)

Honours were relatively even at stumps on day one between Jamaica and the Windwards. Sent in to bat, Jamaica, missing several star players to international duty, closed play at 258/8. Veteran Mario Ventura had the outstanding effort as he checked his bat in for an even 50.

In support of Ventura was young Tamar Lambert (38) and discarded West Indies allrounder Gareth Breese (31). Also adding some useful runs was wicketkeeper Keith Hibbert (29). For the Windwards Darren Sammy and Cameron Cuffy shared the bowling honours, claiming 2/48 and 2/56 respectively.
