Carib Beer Cup 2004

Day 3 The Leeward Islands vs Trinidad and Tobago at Pointe-a-Pierre, Trinidad.

With just one day to go, the Trinidad and Tobago/Leeward Islands game is very interestingly poised after a great day of cricket at Guaracara Park today. Responding to a first innings effort of 335, the Leewards resumed from their overnight position of 173/2.

Opening batsman Shane Jeffers was the first to go for the addition of 2 runs to his overnight 72, falling to the spin Amit Jaggernauth. His partner of the day before, Tonito Willett continued onward and played impressively, passing his highest FC score of 89 before falling 7 short of his maiden hundred. All in all the Leewards fairly collapsed, bar a very good innings of 57 from allrounder Wilden Cornwall and the innings closed on 324, with Trinidad and Tobago grabbing first innings points with a lead of 11 runs.

The pick of the bowlers was far and away Dwayne Bravo. The young allrounder showed true spirit with the ball and in the field and prospered with 6/70. His performance came despite some peculiar and frankly ill-advised decisions and field placements by his captain Imran Jan throughout the day's play.

Following his fantastic show with the ball Bravo strode to the crease with Imran Jan at his side. Soon they were split though, as Bravo (4) fell to a poor stroke off Kerry Jeremy early in the piece - 14/1. The score was doubled before Kanhai (9) returned to the pavilion. At this stage Jan and new Trini Ricardo Powell set about to repair the innings with aggressive strokeplay. Jan launched a full toss out of the ground, showing exciting intent, but was soon after out for 57 nearing the close.

Shazam Babwah came and went and leaves Powell (38 not out) to steady the Trinbagonian innings, with Maraj having moved down the order due an injury sustained earlier in the match.

Day 3 Kenya v West Indies 'B' at Basseterre, St. Kitts.

An inspired comeback from the West Indies 'B' team left their more experienced opponents, Kenya, blushing in defeat. Having fallen for 97 and conceding a 52-run lead on first innings, the 'B' team started the day in big trouble on 88/5.

Overnight batsmen Fudadin (43) and Dinesh Ramdin (19) posted the highest partnership of the innings with 28, before Ramdin departed to a mistimed aerial drive. From 100/6 at this point, the home side improved to 149 before the final wicket fell. Fudadin's top score of 43 came from 153 balls and he hit a solitary boundary.

Maurice Odumbe snared his fifth wicket (Bennett 6) of the innings and tenth of the game to finish with remarkable figures of 10/43 in the match. Set a meagre target of 98 to win, the Kenyans collapsed against outstanding seam bowling from Bennett and Washington. The first successes came early, when Patel (0) and Modi (0) were dismissed by Washington in the first over of the innings. Patel was caught behind off a noball with the first ball of the chase, but was soon trapped in front immediately after. Modi was then caught at slip with the last ball - 1/2.

Experienced players Shah (13) and Tikolo (20) added a good 37 runs, but Sealy accounted for both batsmen within 2 runs of each other. Odumbe then departed for 2 to leave the score 40/5 and Kenya struggled to 67/5 at tea. Still, with only 31 runs required, Kenya sat in the driver's seat upon resumption of play.

Kennedy Obuya (28) seemed on his way to taking Kenya home, but with the score at 78, he was brilliantly caught by Simmons in the covers off Washington's bowling. First innings hero Jason Bennett returned now, wicketless to this point. With three balls, he sensationally continued his season opener, with the wickets of Collins Obuya (1) and Martin Suji (0) yorked on consecutive deliveries. The next ball Bennett achieved his hat-trick by trapping Ongondo (0) in front of the stumps as Kenya had sensationally collapsed from 78/5 to 78/9, still needing 20 runs to win.

The Kenyans were ultimately put out of their misery due a flat throw from the boundary to run out Onyango (5) - 85 all out. Amazingly the tourists contrived to lose by 13 runs.

Day 3 Guyana v Barbados at Bridgetown, Barbados.

A 156-run partnership between Sewnarine Chattergoon (87) and Krishna Arjune (97) helped stall Barbados' homeward charge at the Kensington Oval today. Trailing by 314 runs at the start of their innings, the Guyanese openers started the day having knocked off 12 runs of the deficit.

Azeemul Haniff (8) was bowled early in day by Ryan Nurse, bringing together the fateful partners. Both batsmen (Chattergoon and Arjune) batted aggressively and Chattergoon hit 11 fours in his 157-ball knock before top-edging Tino Best to wicketkeeper. Lennox Cush was then trapped in front first ball as Guyana slipped to 177/3.

Best bowled with hostility during a superb spell that saw him claim his third wicket, that of Narsingh Deonarine (12) hooking to square leg. Arjune batted bravely to defy the fiery Best and with Dowlin, the score moved to 242, before Bradshaw broke through with consecutive deliveries (Arjune and Vishal Nagamootoo). At 242/6, the innings was still heavily in the Bajans' favour, but Mahendra Nagamootoo (40 not out) partnered Travis Dowlin (33 not out) to the close.

Guyana will resume on the fourth and final day of this opening round matchup needing 7 runs to make Barbados bat again at 307/6.
