Kaif injured, out of VB series

Sunday, January 4 2004

Mohammed Kaif, Indian middle-order batsman and star of the famous win at Lord's against England in the 2002 NatWest series final, has been ruled out of the upcoming VB triangular series in Australia starting January 9, because of a thumb injury. Dr. Anant Joshi, BCCI's head medical guy, has informed the team management that Kaif will take at least 2-3 weeks to heal completely.

The national selectors have named Rohan Gavaskar, son of the "Little Master" and former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, as Kaif's replacement. Gavaskar an attacking middle-order batsman, plays for Bengal in the local Indian circuit. In limited overs domestic games, he has played 88 games, and has an average of 32-ish. Ironically though, in the recent A team tournament involving India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, Gavaskar got only a single game in which he was dismissed first ball. Whereas, the likes of Gautam Gambhir and others, who performed much better than Gavaskar in the tournament, didn't get the nod ahead of him.
