Chanders omitted from ODI squad
Tuesday, January 13 2004Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been excluded from the 15-man squad for the West Indies to take on South Africa in the upcoming ODI series. The omission comes as a true shock, as Chanderpaul appears to be fit. Indeed, he was passed fit to play the recently completed four day game against Easterns and to play in the upcoming fourth Test against South Africa.
Other players omitted are Daren Ganga, Adam Sanford and Dave Mohammed. The four who join the team don't present much of a surprise and will please most West Indian fans. Ian Bradshaw, Ryan Hurley, Kurt Wilkinson and Ricardo Powell join the team.
Wilkinson, fresh off his century against Guyana in the Carib Beer Cup is a young allrounder with much apparent talent. He has scored only 174 runs in his eight OD innings with only one fifty. With the ball he has 8 wickets at 12 apiece to date.
Joining Wilkinson in the allrounder category are Ian Bradshaw (283 runs @ 35.37 and 38 wickets @ 19.86 in List A OD's) and Ryan Hurley (195 runs @ 12.18 and 19 wickets @ 34.1). Hurley made his ODI debut last year against the Australians and has played two matches to date, being run out without facing a ball in his only innings. With the ball and in the field he impressed with his energy and accuracy.
The full squad is as follows:
BC Lara (C), RR Sarwan (vc), CH Gayle, RD Jacobs (wk), CS Baugh Jr. (wk), DR Smith, VC Drakes, R Rampaul, M Dillon, FH Edwards, CD Collymore, RO Hurley, IDR Bradshaw, RL Powell, KJ Wilkinson.
