Player Ratings : West Indies
Wednesday, December 17 2003First Test, the New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
WW Hinds - Hinds only scored twice as many runs as wickets he took in this game. His batting looked comfortable in the first innings before he made a slight error of judgement. In the second innings, Hinds was dismissed by an excellent delivery and cannot be very much faulted. Took 5 wickets and had the best returns in both innings for the West Indies.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 6.5/10
D Ganga - Solid first innings effort of 61 before contriving to get himself out. Got a sharp delivery in the second round. Ground fielding was decent but not spectacular.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 7/10
RR Sarwan - Unfortunate to receive the ball he did in each innings as there was little he could about either. Did a fair bit of bowling compared to previous Tests and looked useful at it.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 7.5/10
BC Lara - Lara smashed a majestic 202 against some high quality bowling and took a record 28 off a Peterson over. In the first innings Lara scored 49% of the team score and scored 14 more runs than the team's second innings score. Took a couple of superb catches and tried his best to pull one out for the West Indies.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 9/10
S Chanderpaul - Never really looked good in the first innings, but played beautifully in the second, when no one else stood up significantly. Batted positively with his team in trouble.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 8/10
RD Jacobs - A solid game with the gloves, allowing 6 byes, taking 3 catches and stumping his opposite number. With the bat he never really got going in the first, but played impressively in the second innings.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 8/10
CH Gayle - Very little participation in the game after doing in his hamstring on day one. Still, he batted in both innings and scored 34 runs in total off 36 ball, with 8 fours. This included 4 consecutive boundaries off Nel in the second.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 8.5/10 - for courage.
VC Drakes - Bowled well in the stock bowler's role in both innings. Look the most consistent West Indian bowler. Scored useful first innings runs as well.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 7.5/10
M Dillon - Bowled well without ever looking extremely penetrative or getting much success. Still, he was economical and consistent.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 7/10
FH Edwards - Looked distinctly 'out of it'. Perhaps he is tired, or maybe injured, but only produced a couple of consistently good spurts of bowling.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 4/10
CD Collymore - Was smashed on day one after bowling rather poorly, but came back nicely on day 2 and in the second innings. Struggling with a hamstring ailment though.
Cricket Web Player Rating: 7/10
