New Zealand record historic win
Monday, March 22 2004New Zealand has beaten South Africa by 9 wickets to take out the 2nd test at Eden Park and record their first test victory on home soil against South Africa.
Going into the fifth and final day South Africa were 277/6, still 22 runs short of making New Zealand bat again. Shaun Pollock departing quickly in edging a catch off Chris Martin to Stephen Fleming at first slip giving Martin 11 wickets for the match.
Nicky Boje then came to the crease to join Jacques Rudolph and together they looked to try and form a partnership and get South Africa into a position where they could save the match. Chris Cairns was brought on in search of his 200th test wicket and Boje provided it to him edging a wide delivery to Brendon McCullum. This gave Chris Cairns the honour of being only the 6th cricketer in history to take 200+ wickets and score 3000+ runs.
Makhaya Ntini and David Terbrugge fell shortly after to end the innings at 349 all out meaning New Zealand only required 50 runs for victory. Jacques Rudolph was the star of the South African second innings coming in second ball of the innings and finishing on 154 not out.
Chris Martin was again the star with the ball taking 5/104 while Chris Cairns took 3/64, Oram 1/47 and McMillan 1/3.
New Zealand got the 50 runs required with ease in only losing Mark Richardson for 10. Michael Papps finished on 8 not out with Stephen Fleming smashing 31 from 11 balls.
The teams now head to the Basin Reserve in Wellington for the third and final test where South Africa will be looking to end their horrible New Zealand tour with a test victory. New Zealand however will be looking for another win and create history by winning their first ever test series over South Africa.
