CC2 15-18 July
Saturday, July 19 2003Chris Tremlett took career best figures of 6-51 as Hampshire made an unlikely comeback to defeat Glamorgan by 93 runs and claim their first Championship win of the season. After bowling Hampshire out for 185, Glamorgan piled on the runs, ending with a total of 437, including a Matthew Maynard century. Despite a strong reply, the Welsh side needed just 165 for victory, however they fell horribly short as Tremlett and James Bruce, who took 3-42, did the damage. The Hampshire heroics denied Glamorgan their fourth win in just five matches, and harnessed their push for promotion.
In Worcester, Kabir Ali took eight wickets to help the home side, the division leaders, to a comfortable innings victory against Derbyshire. Kabir's 8-58 also bettered the previous best bowling performance of the season, achieved by Kent's Pakistani paceman, Mohammad Sami, who gave away six more runs whilst taking eight wickets. Worcestershire only scored 301 in their first innings, however this eclipsed Derbyshire's 163. Kabir ensured that Worcestershire would not have to bat again, as he and Nantie Hayward took all ten wickets, as Derbyshire scraped just 96. Only Mohammad Kaif and number eleven Liam Wharton showed any resistance, scoring thirty runs each.
At the Riverside in Durham, Yorkshire were beaten by three wickets, as Durham successfully chased their target of 251. Having taken a first-innings lead of over one hundred, Yorkshire were bowled out for just 129, as Durham's pace partnership of Harmison and Shoain Akhtar took seven wickets. Shoaib also hit the winning runs, with just seven and a half overs remaining on the last day.
