N Boje: Homeward Bound
Saturday, July 19 2003South African left arm spinner Nicky Boje will be flying home to be reunited with his family where he will begin his slow process of rehabilitation after breaking his leg while fielding for South Africa in the recent NatWest Series.
Boje, who underwent a two-and-a-half hour operation to repair a broken left fibula and ruptured ankle ligaments, was due to fly home after South Africa's loss to England in the NatWest final last Saturday, but medical advice was that he should delay flying until this week.
Boje said that he would be out of action for at least four months:
"The doctor said I will be in plaster for six to eight weeks, followed by a month on crutches, after which I can start a slow programme of rehabilitation.
Although clearly disappointed, Boje said it was important to keep a positive frame of mind.
The up side is that I will get to spend a lot of time with my wife and son,"
"The doctor also said I should make a full recovery from the injury."
Nicky Boje has already targeted the end of the year as the time he would like to be in action again. In the meantime, he will have the stitches removed from his leg next week with all other strenuous activity coming to a complete halt.
Although Nicky Boje was selected duly for the one day squad, his absence does leave the South Africans with just the one specialist spinner in left-arm Paul Adams for the upcoming 5 match Test series against England, starting next week.
