Slater to Retire?
Wednesday, May 14 2003Speculation has arisen about the playing future of former Test opening batsman Michael Slater.
Slater, who played over 50 Test matches for his country, knows full well that his international career, barring a miracle, is over.
Hence, he sees no challenge in playing on next summer following a hundred in the final of the Pura Cup for eventual winners New South Wales.
He has been offered a role in the middle order to nurture the young batting talent in the state, with no word at this stage on his response.
Meanwhile, Steve Rixon is believed to have agreed to coach the Blues against next summer, despite speculation on a possible move to coach Sri Lanka or New Zealand.
Mark Waugh is also likely to stay on next summer, despite speculation of retirement for the former Test number 4 and all-time fielding world record holder.
