Vermeulen Sent Packing

Monday, June 9 2003

Talented opening batsman Mark Vermeulen has been sent home from the Zimbabwean tour of England.

Right-handed Vermeulen, who has played 3 Tests and became the thirteenth batsman to suffer the embarrassment of making a pair on the same day of a Test match, has reportedly banished for 'persistent misconduct'.

The promising batsman following his dismissal and the eventual loss chose to leave the ground on his own accord rather than with the team coach, which is adopted by the Zimbabweans as policy that all players must take the coach.

Following 194 against Sussex in a tour match, strong things were expected of Vermeulen, yet his miserable Test series and banishment from the squad adds to the misfortune of the fractured skull he collected at the World Cup.

No replacement has yet been named for the ODI series. Vermeulen may face a disciplinary hearing when he arrives home in Zimbabwe - this time with permission to leave without the rest of the squad.
