West Indies End Streak

Monday, May 26 2003

The West Indies have broken Australia's 21-match ODI winning streak, earning victory by 39 runs in Trinidad.

The West Indies made just 1 change from last match, including Dave Bernard for Vasbert Drakes.

All-rounder Bernard had an eventful debut, failing to bat or bowl.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting again lost the toss, forcing his side, which included Jimmy Maher and Nathan Hauritz to bowl on a batsman-friendly wicket.

The West Indies lost Chris Gayle early, falling LBW to Brett Lee for just 5 in the 2nd over.

Wavell Hinds and Brian Lara then came together, putting together 178 for the second wicket in an excellent partnership.

Andy Bichel, however, snared the double breakthrough of Hinds and Lara, both caught by Adam Gilchrist for 79 and 80 respectively.

Brett Lee then grabbed 2 wickets within 3 balls in the 47th over, with Ramnaresh Sarwan and Marlon Samuels.

Sarwan was dismissed caught behind for 32 after chasing a ball, swinging wildly. Samuels, meanwhile, was trapped LBW for 42 from just 38 balls.

Ricardo Powell (20) and Ridley Jacobs with 7 were the not out batsmen.

For Australia, Brett Lee took 3/56 and Andy Bichel 2/67.

Australia, in pursuit of 291, lost both Adam Gilchrist and Jimmy Maher early to Corey Collymore, and when Ricky Ponting was dismissed by Mervyn Dillon, Australia’s victory chase was effectively over at 3/57.

Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds then put together 92 for the next wicket before Clarke was dismissed for the first time in his ODI career when he holed out to Lara off Dillon for 39.

Symonds fell 5 overs later for 77 when he played on the gentle off-spin of Marlon Samuels to leave the visitors in trouble with Michael Bevan and Ian Harvey at the crease.

Harvey then failed to recapture his form from the first match, bowled by Chris Gayle for 2.

Andy Bichel and Brett Lee both fell cheaply, with Ramnaresh Sarwan claiming his first ODI wicket with the dismissal of Lee.

Nathan Hauritz then enjoyed some batting practice, finishing unbeaten on 20 with Glenn McGrath not out on 3 as Australia’s 21-match streak snapped.

For the hosts, Merv Dillon finished with 3/40 and Corey Collymore 2/25. Marlon Samuels impressed with 2/48 while Ramnaresh Sarwan and Chris Gayle took one wicket each.
