West Indies Recall Gayle

Sunday, April 27 2003

West Indian selectors have ended their tense stand-off with opening batsman Chris Gayle, recalling the controversial left-hander for the Third Test in Barbados.

Gayle, the countries leading opener, has been recalled in place of the sadly out of form Wavell Hinds, who has struggled for runs since before the World Cup and played a painful innings in the Queen's Park Test match.

Also returning to the squad are the injured trio of Ridley Jacobs, Shiv Chanderpaul and Jermaine Lawson.

Jacobs missed the second Test with a groin injury and Lawson with the chickenpox.

Chanderpaul, meanwhile, cited a knee injury for his late withdrawal from the match, yet it was reported that he pulled out in protest against the Board's treatment of his wife's travel arrangements.

As expected, the hapless duo of Pedro Collins and Dave Bernard were dropped.

Tino Best and Omari Banks, Trinidad's puzzling exclusions, retained their places in the squad is did Devon Smith, who earned a pair in just his second test.

Selectors, however, seem likely to stick with the 3 bowler policy adopted in the recent Test match.

The full squad is:

Daren Ganga
Ramnaresh Sarwan
