Day 2: Bangladesh vs SA

Saturday, May 3 2003

Bangladesh continued their impressive efforts on Day 1 with the ball, dismissing South Africa for 330 in their first innings thanks to a national record haul from Mohammad Rafique.

South Africa resumed Day 2 at 264 for 6, with Shaun Pollock unbeaten on 41 and Robin Peterson 15*.

Pollock hopes of a big score, however, was shattered when he was dismissed LBW by Mashrafe Mortaza from just the second ball of the day.

Alan Dawson then joined Peterson at the crease and made just 10 before he was caught by young keeper Mohammad Salim off tweaker Mohammad Rafique, handing Rafique his first 5-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Debutant Peterson was the next man to fall for a brisk 61 when he was caught by Akram Khan off the bowling of young leg-spinner Mohammad Ashraful.

When Paul Adams was bowled by Rafique, the Bangladeshi finger-spinner had snared a national record haul of 6/77, overtaking former captain Nahmuir Rahman.

The other wicket takers were Mohammad Ashraful with 2/42, Mashrafe Mortaza 1/53 and Tapash Baisya 1/67.

Bangladesh then reached 0/4 before the rain forced play to be adjourned in the second session and no resumption was possible as stumps were drawn on day 2.

Scores:

South Africa 330 (J Rudolph 71, M Boucher 71, R Peterson 61, S Pollock 41, Mohammad Rafique 6/77)
