Sussex claim sole Victory

Sunday, May 4 2003

None of the County matches on the dates April 30 - May 3 ended in a results as the English spring rains all won the day.

Sussex (19) claimed a win against Kent (3) at Hove on May 2, despite an Alamgir Sheriyar five-fer. Kent's batting self-destructed twice as Murray Goodwin's 96 was the stand-out display. James Kirtley's 6/26 wrapped up a 133-run win.

Surrey (11) and Warwickshire (12) drew at the Oval, Mark Wagh (136), Adam Hollioake (122) and Nick Knight (103*) making centuries on a pitch that favoured the batsmen where play was possible.

Essex (7) tried to force a result against Leicestershire (8) at Grace Road. A declaration on 191/9 left Leicester to make 179 off 30 overs, but close was reached at 104/5.

Jamie Cox's 126 took Somerset (11) to within four wickets of victory over Derbyshire (7). Andy Caddick took seven wickets but rain and Andrew Gait (63) saved three points for the hosts.

Two centuries from captain John Lewis saved Durham (7) against Gloucestershire (10). Tim Hancock, Jonty Rhodes and Jack Russell all made fifties for Gloucester, whose own John Lewis took four wickets.

Michael Vaughan struggled to 0 and 10* as only two innings were completed at the Rose Bowl as Michael Lumb made 115* and Darren Gough 72 as Yorkshire (9) and Hampshire (7) meandered to a draw.

John Blain and Ben Phillips, on debut, kept Worcestershire (6) down at New Road, and Aussie Phil Jaques made his first first-class century (149*) as Northamptonshire (10) took the majority of the points.

CricketWeb Player of the Round - As I can't give it to that depression that's just off Orkney at the moment, Phil Jaques takes the award with his 149*
