Australia Complete Victory

Tuesday, July 29 2003

Australia have completed a widely-expected series defeat against Bangladesh, winning the Second Test by an innings in Cairns.

Beginning the day at 105/4, Bangladesh crumbled in poor fashion to be all out for 163.

Stuart MacGill took 3 wickets during the final day (Alok Kapali 14, Sanwar Hossain 16, Khaled Mahmud 17) to hand him his third straight 5 wicket haul, his second of the match, and his second career 10-wicket haul in Test Cricket to earn man-of-the-match and series rights.

It seems the days where he was a ready-made replacement for Shane Warne are gone. Steve Waugh has argued that MacGill is a world-class bowler in his own right, and following this display, few would argue.

Jason Gillespie, meanwhile, snared 3 wickets on the day also to finish with an impressive 4/38 for the innings and 7 wickets for the match.

Waugh now argues that Glenn McGrath no longer has a mortgage on the role of number 1 pace bowler following Gillespie's fantastic form.

Day 4 was a sorry tale for the Bangladeshis, despite the fact their batsmen had show so much application in the first innings, they crumbled in typical fashion to hand Australia an innings victory.

For Australia, MacGill finished with figures of 5/56 and Gillespie 4/38. Brett Lee took the other wicket on day 3.

MacGill's 17 wicket series-haul earns him the man-of-the-series award ahead of Darren Lehmann and Steve Waugh.

Scores:

Bangladesh 295 (Hannan Sarkar 76, S MacGill 5/77)

Australia 4 dec. 556 (D Lehmann 177, S Waugh 157*, M Love 100*)

Bangladesh 163 (Sarkar 55, MacGill 5/56, J Gillespie 4/38)

Australia won by an innings and 98 runs.
