Trescothick Injury Woes

Friday, July 25 2003

Marcus Trescothick has suffered a fractured finger on the first day of the first Npower Test against South Africa at Edgbaston.

Marcus Trescothick was standing at second slip when he tried to stop an edge that didn't quite carry from Herschelle Gibbs off a Steve Harmison slower ball. Marcus Trescothick went to hospital where an X-ray revealed that he had suffered a small fracture to the tip of his right index finger.

No decision has been made as to whether Marcus Trescothick will bat in the match. He will receive ice treatment and the injury will be reassessed in the morning.

If Marcus Trescothick doesn't feel he can bat in this match the England Selectors will need to start looking for a replacement for the second Test at Lord's, due to the fact the two games are back-to-back and if the injury is too serious now, it's doubtful that the injury will have time to heal in the few days of rest.
