Flintoff shines as Eng lose
Monday, August 4 2003Graeme Smith and Makhaya Ntini shared the man of the match award for their parts in South Africa's comprehensive victory over England. Smith scored the highest Test score by an overseas player at Lord's with 259, and Ntini became the first South African to take ten wickets at Lord's. However, England's defeat seemed inevitable since the first session of the match when they lost five early wickets.
England, resuming with two wickets down failed to occupy the crease, until Andrew Flintoff arrived. He smashed 142, his highest Test score, including five sixes and eighteen fours.
New England captain Michael Vaughan realised that his team made mistakes but also applauded Graeme Smith and the South Africans for their outstanding performance.
