Wagg Pleaded Guilty To Cocaine Use
Wednesday, September 29 2004Warwickshire cricketer Graham Wagg has pleaded guilty to failing a drugs test for cocaine.
The England A all-rounder attended a hearing of the England and Wales Cricket Board's disciplinary panel and admitted taking the drug. The hearing, which was held at Lord's on Monday, was adjourned until 18 October when his punishment will be handed out.
The 21-year-old, who faces a lengthy ban, has since expressed his remorse at the incident. A statement released on his behalf said: "Mr Wagg is deeply remorseful and determined to show his employers and cricket fans that he will accept the punishment meted out to him."
Wagg gave the positive sample after a random drugs test following the final Totesport League game of the season against Gloucestershire.
Any cricketer found to have taken a prohibited substance can expect a lengthy ban from the game. Ed Giddins was suspended for 18 months in 1996 after traces of cocaine showed up in a random drugs test and of course Shane Warne only recently returned to action after a long layoff.
