Nottinghamshire v Somerset, Trent Bridge

Somerset have produced a commanding 10 wicket win over competition front runners Nottinghamshire to keep alive their slim hopes of promotion.

Tasmanian Jamie Cox scored a brilliant 250 runs, including 35 fours and a six in Somerset’s first innings to set up the win. He was assisted by team mates Matt Wood and James Hildreth, who both notched up centuries, helping them to a massive score of 654, a lead of 317 over Nottinghamshire, who earlier finished with a disappointing first innings of 337.

The home side resumed day four on 134 for 1 in their second innings, needing a further 183 runs to make the opposition bat again. They soon crumbled, as left arm spinner Ian Blackwell ripped through the home side’s line up, ending with figures of 90 for 7. Darren Bicknell was the only batsman to offer any form of resistance, scoring 142 runs and hitting 20 boundaries. Notts had ended their innings on 317, meaning that Somerset needed just one run for victory. Four balls into the fourth innings it was all over and the visitors had secured a vital win.

If they are to be promoted, Somerset will need to win their next two games and will also be relying on Notts to beat third placed Glamorgan this weekend.
