Bradshaw sixfer beats Bajans

Friday, September 3 2004

The West Indies just managed to win their first of their warmup games for the Champions Trophy, against Barbados yesterday, behind a 6-wicket haul from Bajan Ian Bradshaw. Training in Bermuda, the Windies senior side was led by Ramnaresh Sarwan and batted first on a difficuly track. They were ultimately restricted to 133/9 in 50 overs with left-arm spin of Suleiman Benn (3/29) and Ryan Hinds (3/39) taking 3 wickets apiece. Medium pacer Wilkinson was the other major wicket-taker, with 2/33. Former West Indies allrounder, Ryan Hurley also was effective, bowling 10 overs of offspin and taking 1/11.

Wavell Hinds and Chris Gayle opened the batting for the West Indies and put on a useful 41 whilst getting the top two scores of the innings - 27 and 18 respectively. Wilkinson dismissed both Jamaican left-handers and from then on the only men to breach double figures were Ramnaresh Sarwan (12), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (19 not out) and Courtney Browne (12).

Defending the low total, the West Indians struck early behind Bradshaw's left-arm steady seam. He removed Martin Nurse (3), Kurt Wilkinson (5), Dale Richards (4), Ryan Hinds (0) and Floyd Reifer (1) and suddenly the Bajans were 19/5. Captain and former West Indies opening batsman, Sherwin Campbell topscored with 45 from 112 balls, but only got support from Hurley. The two were the only batsmen to get more than 7 runs and they shared in a 73-run stand for the 7th wicket.

Hurley scored a quick 37 from 56 balls and when he eventually perished to Mervyn Dillon, Barbados was still in with a chance of victory - 102/7. When Campbell was out to Chris Gayle's steady offbreaks, the ship was just about sunk though, and the innings eventually closed at 123 all out. Bradshaw ended with amazing stats of 10-2-15-6 while Dillon, Bravo, Sammy and Gayle took a wicket each.
