CC Div1: Sussex ease to victory

Sussex win battle of the spinners
Defending champions Sussex recorded only their second championship victory in this 2004 season as they comfortably beat Kent at Hove today.
Needing a confidant and assertive middle order performance, Kent found exactly the opposite as spinners Davis and Mushtaq Ahmed again took charge. Only Matt Walker and Alex Loudon offered any resistance. Niall O'Brien was stumped by Prior off the bowling of Davis. Two young keepers involved in the dismissal, but like Tino Best up the road at Lord's, it was not the time for able batsmen to wandering down the pitch.
Amjad Khan was caught by Kirtley off of Mushtaq Ahmed's bowling to seal the game up for the home team, who had been clinicial against a strong Kent side. Kent admittedly missed the presence of Rob Key who was with the test squad, and they came out second in a game where spinners took 19 of the 30 wickets taken. For the home supporters it was just a pity they could not have displayed the same credentials at the top end of the season.
Kent 330
Fulton 122, Davis 3-54, Mushtaq Ahmed 3-59
Sussex 618
Cottey 185, Patel 5-138
Kent 243
Walker 63, Mushtaq Ahmed 4-97, Davis 4-54
Sussex won by an innings and 45 runs
