THE 2004 PRESIDENTS CUP
Day Eight

The Windward Islands confirmed a semi-final spot with a tight win over Trinidad and Tobago, whilst Barbados dominated Guyana to do the same.

Guyana vs. Barbados
Bourda, Georgetown, Guyana

Toss: Barbados

Winning the toss, Barbados elected to bat first. Martin Nurse (1), Dale Richards (7) and Sherwin Campbell (5) were early wickets to Griffith and King and it was 17/3. Floyd Reifer (72) and Ryan Hinds (71) then provided the spine of an eventual total of 244 with their 136-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Following their demise, Ryan Hurley (22) and Courtney Browne (42) provided cameos to spur on to the eventual total. Reon King (10-1-28-2) was the pick of the Guyanese bowlers, but Griffith (2/36) and McGarrell (2/39) were also among the wickets. Mahendra Nagamootoo was unfortunately belted for 42 runs in his 6 wicketless overs.

Young Christian (0) did not last long against the quality Bajan seam attack, and was first out, bowled by Collins. Sewnarine Chattergoon (24) and Lennox Cush (31) then rebuilt the innings, before the former was dismissed by the very part-time medium pacer, Martin Nurse. This appeared to send the innings into shock and 5 more wickets were lost for 41 runs. Captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul made just 16 before Bradshaw got him and Deonarine got a single run, then Nurse had him caught behind.

Bradshaw also accounted for Chattergoon and Pedro Collins bowled Dowlin for 2. Neil McGarrell (14) was the last of the slide, trapped in front by Collins. Chasing 245 for victory, Guyana was miserably placed at 114/7. Mahendra Nagamootoo (15) and Damodar Daesrath (38) tried a last gasp effort to get to the target but it was far too little too late and the break of that partnership was followed by the last 2 wickets for 1 run between them.

Barbados innings 244/7 (50 overs)
Floyd Reifer 72, Ryan Hinds 71, Courtney Browne 42
Reon King 2/28 (10), Rayan Griffith 2/36 (7), Neil McGarrell 2/39 (8)

Guyana innings 164 all out (37.4 overs)
Damodar Daesrath 38, Lennox Cush 31
Pedro Collins 3/23 (8), Sulieman Benn 2/21 (4.4), Ian Bradshaw 2/30 (8), Martin Nurse 2/40 (7)

Result: Barbados won by 80 runs
Points: Bar 5, Guy 0
Man of the Match: Floyd Reifer

Trinidad and Tobago vs. Windward Islands
Enmore Recreation Ground, Enmore, Guyana

Toss: Trinidad and Tobago

Inserted by Daren Ganga, the Windward Islands batsmen got off to a solid start. Devon Smith (24) and Junior Murray (64) put on 44 runs to start the flow. Smith was then run out, and 72 runs later Emmanuel (28) was out in the same fashion. At 116/2 Trinidad and Tobago began to claw themselves back into the game.

Eugene (11), Sebastien (37), Lewis (13) and Sammy (25) all made contributions to complement Murray's half-century, but Rodney Sooklal's 4/46 saw to it that only 219 was managed in total. Sherwin Ganga, Imran Jan and Richard Kelly also took a wicket each.

In the chase Ricardo Powell, the makeshift opener, was bowled by Fernix Thomas for 1. Sherwin Ganga (46) and Daren Ganga (19) recovered nicely but then perished within 13 runs of each other - 72/3. Another recovery took root by the bats of Gregory Mahabir (24) and the powerful Shazam Babwah (28) but by the time both were dismissed it was 139/5, still will 81 runs needed to win.

Opener Imran Jan, batting at six, started well with 24, but like everyone else before him he could not carry on. Now much burden was left on young Dinesh Ramdin (33 not out) and he handled the pressure maturely, but Richard Kelly (9) and Samuel Badree (22) could not partner him for long enough. A hero from a couple of days before, Reyad Emrit did not produce on this occasion and was unfortunately run out for 1.

When all the drama was complete, the Trinbagonians scored 218/9 and remained 2 runs short of the required target. The 1-run defeat means that T&T must defeat the Leeward Islands on Sunday 24th to clinch a semi-final spot.

Windward Islands innings 219 all out (49.1 overs)
Junior Murray 64, Liam Sebastien 37
Rodney Sooklal 4/46

Trinidad and Tobago innings 218/9 (50 overs)
