T&T and Windwards take upset wins
Monday, October 18 2004
The 2004 Presidents Cup got off to a cracking start in Guyana on Saturday. Matchups between the Windwards and Jamaica and Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago saw severe upsets at the outset.
Windward Islands vs. Jamaica
Bourda, Guyana
Toss: Jamaica
A good return to regional cricket by Marlon Samuels (55) was not enough to prevent a Jamaican slide and the regional powerhouse was all out for 139 batting first at Bourda. Left-armer Kenroy Peters (3/24) and Rawl Lewis (4/13) were the main instigators as wickets fell frequently, barring a 40-run stand between Samuels and Carlton Baugh Jr. (28) for the 5th wicket and a 52-run stand between Samuels and Dave Bernard Jr. (15) for the sixth.
Peters claimed the first 3 wickets of the innings - Chris Gayle (10), Xavier Marshall (0), Wavell Hinds (3) - a formidable trio. Jamaican captain and Durham international Gareth Breese did not trouble the scorers. Young West Indies senior player, Darren Sammy bowled 6-1-21-0.
In the Windwards' chase, Test opener Devon Smith (0) was quickly dismissed by Daren Powell, who finished with 1/20 from his 4 overs. From the stage (1/1) of potential difficulty, Junior Murray (former West Indies wicketkeeper) played an unbeaten 71 to help guide his team home.
Jamaica innings 139 all out (36.5 overs)
Marlon Samuels 55, Carlton Baugh 28, Dave Bernard 15
Rawl Lewis 5/13 (4.5), Kenroy Peters 3/24 (6)
Windward Islands innings 141/3 (23.5 overs)
Junior Murray 71*, Craig Emmanuel 43
Gareth Breese 1/15 (1), Nikita Miller 1/16, Daren Powell 1/20 (4)
Result: Windwards won by 7 wickets
Points: Win 6, Jam 0

Trinidad and Tobago vs. Barbados
Enmore, Guyana
Toss: Barbados
A seriously understrength Trinidad and Tobago side (without Lara, Dillon, Lendl Simmons, Rampaul, Bravo and Mohammed) shocked Barbados with a 3-wicket win to start their campaign. The victory would have been far sweeter too, but for some careless batting late in the innings that saw 4 wickets fall for 18 runs.
The Bajans won the toss and chose to bat first. Former senior opener, Sherwin Campbell (53) and Martin Nurse started well with an 87-run stand in 20 overs. Sherwin Ganga dismissed Nurse and 6 wickets were then lost for 69 runs, before Antonio Mayers (23) and Champions Trophy hero Ian Bradshaw (22 not out) rebuilt the innings. Ultimately Barbados was dismissed for 209 with Imran Jan snaring 4/46 with his part-time offbreaks. Sherwin Ganga took 3/28 and Rodney Sooklal 1/34. West Indies players Ryan Hinds, Dwayne Smith and Courtney Browne scored 1, 4 and 12 respectively.
Trinidad and Tobago began briskly in the chase and Imran Jan (49) and Sherwin Ganga (53) put on 108 for the first wicket. Both openers were dismissed at that score, so captain Daren Ganga (46) and debutant Gregory Mahabir (13) then Ricardo Powell (18) were made to rebuild. Bradshaw (5-0-33-0) was surprisingly ineffective early on and indeed, Corey Collymore (8-0-30-0) was the only seamer to trouble the batsmen. Dwayne Smith's 2 overs went for 20 runs.
Following the Tribagonian spin tactic, Ryan Hurley (4/40) and Suleiman Benn (0/45) and Ryan Hinds (1/15) were summoned upon for the middle overs. However, it was not until Hurley ripped through the middle order toward the end of the chase that they had any significant effect. Samuel Badree (5 not out) and former West Indies U19 skipper Denesh Ramdin (1 not out) were there at the end to seal the victory.
Barbados innings 209/8 (50 overs)
Sherwin Campbell 53, Martin Nurse 53, Antonio Mayers 23
Imran Jan 4/46 (8), Sherwin Ganga 3/28 (10)
Trinidad and Tobago innings 210/7 (41.5 overs)
Sherwin Ganga 53, Imran Jan 49, Daren Ganga 46
Ryan Hurley 4/40 (8.5), Ryan Hinds 1/15 (4), Antonio Mayers 1/18 (3)
Result: T&T won by 3 wickets
Points: T&T 4, Bar 0
