Jacobs omitted from CT squad

Thursday, August 12 2004

The 36-year-old Ridley Jacobs may be facing the end of his international career as of suggestions lately. Jacobs has been omitted from the West Indies squad for the Champions Trophy to be competed for in England later this year. Instead the wicketkeeping duties will be done by Barbados captain Courtney Browne (34), who receives yet another international recall.

In 28 ODI matches Browne has managed 187 runs at 12.46 as opposed to Jacobs' 1865 runs and 23.31 average in 147 matches.

Other changes to the squad which competed in the Natwest series this year are the inclusion of Mervyn Dillon, Wavell Hinds and Corey Collymore and the exclusion of Devon Smith, Tino Best, Ravi Rampaul, Carlton Baugh and Darren Sammy. Best and Rampaul have been left out due to injury, but the others reportedly due to lack of performance, although young Sammy is yet to represent the West Indies in an international.

The big return will be that of Wavell Hinds who has not played an international game for the best part of a year, sidelined through injury. The other big squad-related item is the lack of a captaincy appointment. No captain has been appointed as yet. There will first be a meeting on August 11th to address the matter.

The full squad is as follows:

BC Lara, RR Sarwan, CH Gayle, WW Hinds, RL Powell, M Dillon, CO Browne (wk), IDR Bradshaw, CD Collymore, SC Joseph, DR Smith, S Chanderpaul, DJJ Bravo, JJC Lawson.
