Sri Lanka sweep aside Zimbabwe
Sunday, October 10 2004Sri Lanka required only 51.1 overs to destroy Zimbabwe in a comprehensive 7 wicket win.
After winning the toss and putting their opponents in to bat, only 2 men made into double figures as the 5 Sri Lankan bowlers shared the wickets around in skittling the Zimbabweans for only 104.
Opener Stuart Matsikenyeri made 37 of the first 54 runs, and on his dismissal Dion Ebrahim an unbeaten 24, but the last 7 wickets fell for only 32 runs as Chaminda Vaas, Upal Chandana and Dilhara Dernando ran riot.
In reply, Saman Jayantha and Sanath Jayasuriya made a rapid 49 before the former became the first of 2 Elton Chigumbara victims, but from then on in it was the lesser batsmen who got a hit as Marvan Atapattu, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene all sat and watched a win with only 18.1 overs faced, Farveez Maharoof taking the man of the match award, probably for his 3 maidens from 5 overs.
ZIMBABWE 104
Matsikenyeri 37(46), Chandana 3-15(6), Maharoof 2-11(5), Vaas 2-20(8), Fernando 2-33(8)
SRI LANKA 108-3
