C Read Signs Three Year Contract
Tuesday, September 21 2004Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper Chris Read has agreed a new three-year contract that will see him stay at Trent Bridge until 2007.
Read returned to his county side Nottinghamshire at the start of the summer aiming to prove the selectors wrong for dropping him for Geraint Jones and he didn't do a bad job by averaging more than 50 with the bat (807 runs @ 50.43).
Director of cricket Mick Newell said: "Everyone would agree Chris is the best gloveman in the country and his keeping has again been world class." Newell went onto say that "He moved up our batting order to show the England selectors he has what it takes and he's done that by scoring two hundreds and six half-centuries."
With all the talk that came from the wicket keeping debate, it was clear that out of the two formats of the game, Read was the choice for the shorter game.
Unfortunately for Read he was unable to repay the faith in all the backers as his One Day season was less than successful scoring just 210 runs all season and with outfielder J Gallian taking more catches.
Season Stats: Chris Read
County Championship: 807 runs @ 50.43 - 35 ct & 3 st
ToteSport League: 210 runs @ 23.20 - 10 ct & 8 st
