Jones leads Glam revival
Thursday, August 5 2004CC2: Jones leads the fight back for Glamorgan
Taunton: Somerset v Glamorgan
Having spent his initial spell being dispatched to all parts by Ricky Ponting, Simon Jones fought back in excellent style today, as Glamorgan clawed their way back into the game. Nothing had looked less likely as Bowler and Ponting took the hosts to 229 for 1, and a massive first innings lead seemed inevitable. Darren Thomas started the resistance by shifting Ponting, then Jones took two in quick succession to bring his side right back into the game. Ian Blackwell launched into the Glamorgan attack in typical style, but was eventually removed by Jones two short of a hundred Somerset eventually finished 132 ahead on the first innings: very handy, but much less than they would have expected. Mark Wallace and Matt Elliott reduced the deficit to 35 by the close, and a terrific last two days are in prospect.
Glamorgan 262
Elliott 103, Thomas 54, Francis 5 for 42
Somerset 394
Ponting 117, Blackwell 98, S. Jones 5 for 94
Glamorgan 97 for 0
Elliott 43*, Wallace 53*
Southampton: Hampshire v Essex
The quality of Will Jefferson's first day double hundred was clearly shown today as Hampshire folded meekly, with only John Crawley resisting for any length of time. Pick of the attack was Kiwi Andre Adams, who ripped out the middle order and eventually had fine figures of 4 for 46. Despite a first innings lead of 239, Essex chose not to enforce the follow on and by stumps they had established a lead of 355. With seven wickets in hand and two days to play, they will now be confident of completing a much-needed victory.
Essex 416
Jefferson 222, Bruce 3 for 74, Warne 4 for 118
Hampshire 177
Crawley 55, Adams 4 for 46
Essex 116 for 3
Grayson 63*
