Jefferson hits Hants with double
Wednesday, August 4 2004CC2: Jefferson hits double hundred to defy Hants
Southampton: Hampshire v Essex
Will Jefferson hit a career best 222 to take Essex to a respectable 416 all out after Shane Warne invited them to bat. Although no other batsman passed 40, Jefferson's outstanding innings lifted his side to what looks a well over par score, and Hampshire will need to bat especially well if they are to maintain their push for promotion.
Essex 416
Jefferson 222, Bruce 3 for 74, Warne 4 for 118
Taunton: Somerset v Glamorgan
Simon Francis led the way with a terrific spell of bowling as promotion hopefuls Glamorgan were skittled for 262. Only Matt Elliott's 103, with some late support from Darren Thomas, provided any resistance. In reply, Somerset raced to 143 for 1, with Bowler and Ponting unbeaten on 51 and 71 respectively. Simon Jones' search for form has made little progress, and his six wicketless overs went for 46.
Glamorgan 262
Elliott 103, Thomas 54, Francis 5 for 42
Somerset 143 for 1
Bowler 51*, Ponting 71*
