Jones Desire For Limited-Over Game

Wednesday, November 17 2004

Simon Jones has admitted that his desire to establish himself in England's one-day side could force him to leave totesport League champions Glamorgan.

Glamorgan won the one-day title for the second time in three seasons with Jones often been regarded as surplus to the Dragons' one-day requirements and the paceman concedes he may leave the county if he remains on the fringes of their line-up.

Jones has never featured in a one-day international after injuries to his knee and foot prevented his inclusion by coach Duncan Fletcher sooner, but will be hoping to get his first opportunity during the forthcoming one-day matches against Namibia and Zimbabwe.

However the chances of breaking into the one-day side are likely to be limited unless he can do the same at county level, which is not likely while Glamorgan are on such a fine run in the limited over competition winning the limited over championship twice in the past three seasons, as well as a semi-final beth in the twenty20 competition.

"It's very frustrating not playing for Glamorgan because if you play a lot of one-day cricket it rounds you as a cricketer so I've missed out there," said Jones, who has played only 10 domestic one-day matches since making his county debut six years ago.

"I was just the drinks boy for Glamorgan, I was very frustrated because I'd rather be on the field than carrying the drinks and I knew I should have been in the team. I back myself any time I play so I was obviously very disappointed when I wasn't getting selected."

Jones still has one year to run on his current deal and has been offered a two-year extension by Glamorgan, but may consider running his contract out and moving elsewhere if he does not get further opportunities.

"It's not nice to be labelled just as a four-day player or a Test player. You want to succeed at cricket and succeed at all levels and when you're not given a chance that's very frustrating because you don't get to prove to people what you can do and that's happened over the last couple of years at Glamorgan. I haven't made my mind up yet what I want to do, but whatever I do will be best for Simon Jones."

"I see this tour as a chance to establish myself in the one-day side. I played a couple of games for Glamorgan last season and they went fine and I think I've got a lot more consistency and accuracy with my bowling compared to when I was younger."

England play the first of two matches against Namibia on Sunday where Jones will be hoping to make a big impact.
